2D Truss Modeling (BACK TO TOP)

A tutorial on how to create a 2D truss model in VisualAnalysis. Learn how to sketch a model, set member properties, and define supports. While VA 18.0 introduced a "Plane Frame" structure type to simplify 2D modeling, this video was made for VA 17.0 and starts with a Space Frame.

  1. Start with a Plane Frame structure type in the Project Settings
  2. Draw or otherwise create your members.
  3. Make the truss-members using the "Simple-Simple" connection type or use Mz end-releases on any truss member.

2D Academic Truss (BACK TO TOP)

VisualAnalysis is designed to handle real-world scenarios where members deform under gravity loads. VisualAnalysis can also solve academic problems such as a "pure" truss as demonstrated in this video. While VA 18.0 introduced a "Plane Frame" structure type to simplify 2D modeling, this video was made for VA 17.0 and starts with a Space Frame.

  1. Start with a Plane Frame structure type in the Project Settings.
  2. Draw or otherwise create your members.
  3. Make the truss-members using the "Simple-Simple" connection type or use Mz end-releases on any truss member.
  4. Disable the automatic self weight in the Service Cases of the Load Case Manager for the D case.
  5. Do not apply any member loads (use only nodal loads).
  6. To include self weight, manually calculate the weights of members and distribute to the nodes.
